TREATY

Opening weekend of the Super 14 competition & my beloved Auckland Blues downed The Crusaders 34 to 29, this caused a great deal of pleasure in our household, but probably not a lot of fun for all those one eyed Cantabrians.

This week we take another public holiday in the form of New Zealand’s national day, known as Waitangi Day after the treaty signed between the English & Maori. This has been a source of contention ever since for numerous reasons, but the most basic has to be that it was written in both English & Maori. Problem was ,that Maori chiefs could not read English & the English person writing it, could not speak fluent Maori. If you wanted to set up a legal nightmare for the future then this would be the way to do it.

However, we get another day off work & as the Sun is shining it promises to be brilliant.
