Richard Burton could not resist showering his then wife Elizabeth Taylor with gifts. Notably a famous diamond ring that cost at the time 1.1 million US dollars. The ring was shipped to him with armed guards & caused a riot in the press.
When the dust had settled, John Gielgud who was visiting the Burtons was amused while helping with the washing up, to find the ring lying on the draining board next to a saucer.
